Everyone has fallen in love with decking and no wonder – the benefits it offers are many and varied. But is it right for your home?
Decking is an alternative to hard landscaped features such as patios and terraces. It became popular at the time that homeowners realised the garden was under-utilised not just as a feature of their home but how they used it.
Using the garden as an outdoor ‘room’ is how many of us use the space but for this to happen, it needs to be updated. Decking was the solution, one that fits most gardens and budgets.
But are there specific benefits to timber decking?
From awkward shaped areas to hard-to-reach spaces, decking offers the solution needed to be able to use all areas of your garden. Laying a patio or terrace may not be as easy and still mean that some areas are unusable.
The beauty of timber decking is that unusable space becomes space for playing, socialising and more. Uneven ground, for example, is useless. You can’t play on it or put your sun lounger on it so you can relax in the sun… but timber decking ‘flattens’ uneven ground, making it usable space once again.
There is a certain stylish twist decking, whether it is a simple, single-level design or decking with several layers, steps and other features. Using treated decking also means it has a beautiful colour which ages well. And don’t forget, you can stain and paint decking so that it takes on even more style.
Decking needs very little maintenance – brushing off leaves and other detritus is about all you need to do, along with the occasional wash down – and, if there is a need, can be easily repaired. The affected piece of timber is simply removed and replace. And if you want to extend the decking area, it is easy to do with the extension looking no different to the original.
Whether it is a summer soiree with friends or an evening chilling on the patio watching the children play as the sun sets, decking is comfortable to use. Wood is a natural material and so is full of warmth, both to look at and when you use it.
There is no doubt that adding decking to your garden is a great step. It can be a standalone platform in the garden or act as the bridge that connects the interior of your home to the garden.
But it will only last the test of time and use if the decking is made from quality timber treated for outdoor use. Installation is key too. The ground needs to be prepared and the frame that holds everything in place needs to be both sturdy and strong.
Our team can make sure that the installation is of a high standard and they can help you design the perfect decking for your home too.
