The Signs You Need to Renovate Your Home

It can be hard knowing where to start or what to do when it comes to home renovations and updates. Many people plan their home renovations over the winter ready to start in the spring. But how do you know it’s time to do more than simply decorate?

Your home feels too big or too small

The feeling of a home being crowded is not uncommon. This is usually the basis for many of the home makeover shows on TV. Older properties, in particular, were built at a time when we lived our lives in different ways. Today, some of those styles no longer work for the modern family.

But what about when your home feels empty? This can be an issue too and although we assume that when we feel this, the only solution is to sell and buy something smaller. But, property experts believe that this is also a case of recognising that the layout and flow of your home also needs to be updated.

If you don’t want to sell, how would you renovate your home so that you have the different spaces you need to help the flow of life in the property?

Your home feels outdated

From the style of the kitchen to the wallpaper in the hallway, if you look around your home and feel that it is dated and in need of some tender loving care, then the message is clear. But where will you start? How big is your budget?

Peeling paint

Paint manufacturers have created products over the decades that have improved with time and that means that emulsion and gloss paints can last for decades.

But over time, white gloss with yellow and paint will also start to peel and chip. When this happens, you know that the paint is old, very old. And that means the time has come to update.

In some cases, it could be no more than decoration but in other cases, it could be the opportunity to deal with some underlying issues. From old, ‘blown’ plaster to updating the light fittings and electric sockets, is this the opportunity you will take to update your home?

Your bathroom and kitchen look old

When was the last time you update the kitchen? When did you invest in your current bathroom suite?

Both of these rooms are heavy use areas and even though you have invested in quality products, over time, they will start to breakdown. And so if you have a kitchen cupboard door that has been repaired more than times that you can remember or the sparkle of the bathroom has dulled, the time has come to update these rooms.

They can also have the feeling of being old-fashioned and no longer support your activities. This could be a kitchen that doesn’t offer you the storage you need or a bathroom that is difficult for you to use.

Start with the important things first

Home improvements can be draining on the budget and it can be difficult to decide where to start. Prioritise the list of things you want to accomplish and set a budget so that the important work is completed first.
